Ten for a Tenner: International Wine Challenge Announces Top 10 Medal Winners for Under £10

December 4, 2013

The 31st International Wine Challenge announces its list of Gold and Silver medal winning wines retailing under £10.

The International Wine Challenge (IWC) today announces ten wines retailing under £10 that have won prestigious Gold and Silver medals at the first tasting session of its 2014 competition. With award-winning wines from as little as £6.99, the IWC has again shown that consumers can find top-quality wines to suit any budget.

The Golden Triangle
  • There were three Gold-winning wines priced under a tenner. Chile produced two – Viña Cono Sur’s 2013 Reserva Especial Sauvignon Blanc (RRP £9.99), and Casillero del Diablo Carménère (2012) from Concha y Toro (£8.00).
  • The third was Morrisons’ 2012 Signature Alsace Gewürztraminer, priced at £7.99 and the only supermarket own-brand wine to win the highest accolade at this session of the IWC.

Seven bottles of Silver
  • Great-value Silvers came from across the globe, with awards going to sub -£10 wines from Spanish, Chilean, South African, French and New Zealand producers.
  • At £6.99, Bodegas Castillo De Fuenmayo’s Gran Familia Rioja (NV) was the best-priced Silver medallist.
  • Another Spanish producer, Viñedos de Aldeanueva’s (2009) Marques del Norte, won silver for its £8.50 Rioja Reserva for ASDA’s Extra Special range.
  • Marks and Spencer scooped Silver with two 2012 South African wines priced at just under £10: Honeycomb Journey’s End Chardonnay and Helderberg Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • £9.99 would buy you a choice of two sterling Silvers: Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference 2013 New Zealand Riesling or a 2012 Héritages Lirac from French winemaker Ogier.
  • Completing the Silver selection is Chilean winemaker Viña San Rafael’s 2012 Oveja Negra Reserva Cabernet Franc, costing just £8.25.
  • After 30 years, the IWC has made a fundamental change to its judging schedule. There are now separate tastings in autumn and spring, allowing winemakers to choose when to enter their wines during the global industry’s different production and sales cycles.
  • Newly-added Tranche 1 took place at the end of November; Tranche 2 will happen in April 2014, as in previous years.

Charles Metcalfe, Co-Chairman of the IWC commented:

“These awards are hugely impressive and show that consumers can find fantastic wine, whatever their budget. With the IWC medal on the bottle as a seal of approval, you can trust the quality of the contents as it will have been judged by some of the most experienced wine tasters in the world. These medals really help to highlight the rise of excellent wines available in the supermarket and on the high street.”
