On September 9th, the great and the good of the UK trade gathered for the IWC Industry Awards, returning to a full celebratory black-tie dinner at the Guildhall, London.
The night's big on-trade winner was the Bath-based restaurant and wine merchant hybrid: Corkage. Run by hospitality duo Richard Knighting and Marty Grant, the team at Corkage are trained to be "walking wine lists," expertly guiding customers through a brilliantly diverse selection.
Continuing the on-trade success, Hallgarten & Novum took home the coveted On Trade Supplier of the Year award. The IWC judges praised their Cellar Series initiative and noted that, even in a challenging market, the company had boosted year-on-year performance by 25 percent.
The vital lifeblood of the trade was also recognised, with Graft Wine, North & South, and Hallgarten & Novum awarded Small, Medium, and Large Agents of the Year, respectively. Judges highlighted that Graft Wine has quickly built huge authority and credibility, staying true to their ethos from the start. North & South Wines were commended for achieving double-digit growth in a tough market, while also making a positive impact on the industry, the planet, and their colleagues.
The night's big supermarket winner was undoubtedly Tesco, which claimed three major awards: Own Label Range of the Year, Buying Team of the Year (sponsored by Brand Phoenix), and Supermarket of the Year (sponsored by Origin Wines). Highlights included the bold and successful launch of Floreal, as well as strong supplier relationships with top wineries such as Union Champagne, Howard Park, and Catena. Judges were also impressed by Tesco's expansion of its premium range and efforts to encourage customers to trade up.
