The best Merlot and Syrah come from… New Zealand. The best Cabernet Sauvignon comes from… South Africa.
The world of wine is changing fast. But the International Wine Challenge (IWC) – the world’s most rigorously judged wine competition – shows the direction of travel. This is especially true with the Trophy results, released today. They are full of surprises that illustrate the changes and show how the so-called ‘New World’ is challenging the status of the Old World’s most famous wine regions.
The IWC 2025 Trophy results also show the best Chardonnay comes from Australia, the best Riesling from Austria and the best Malbec, less surprisingly, comes from Argentina.
The best red from Spain is… a Mencia from Galicia.
The best red from Italy? A Schioppettino di Prepotto from Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
The best red from Australia? A Pinot Noir from Tasmania.
And England is producing world-class sparkling, white AND red wines. In fact, one Devon-based winery collected four Trophies this year for its still wines.
However, France still produces the best Pinot Noir and GSM (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre) blend. Maison Albert Bichot’s Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Hospices de Beaune Cuvée Cyrot Chaudron 2023 scored 97pts on its way to taking four trophies: the International Pinot Noir Trophy, Clos de la Roche Trophy, French Pinot Noir Trophy, and French Red Trophy. Château Rouquette-sur-Mer was awarded the International GSM Trophy, La Clape Trophy, and French GSM Trophy for its Cuvée L’Esprit Terroir 2023.
Burgundy producer Maison Albert Bichot was the biggest winner at this year’s competition. As well as the four trophies for its Clos de la Roche, the pretty 18th-century manor house also picked up the Echézeaux Trophy with its Echezeaux Grand Cru Domaine du Clos Frantin 2023 and another SIX trophies for two white wines which also scored 97 points each:

  • Maison Albert Bichot’s Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes Domaine du Pavillon 2023 won the Les Charmes Trophy, Meursault Trophy, French Chardonnay Trophy, and French White Trophy.
  • Maison Albert Bichot’s Chablis Grand Cru Les Vaudésirs Domaine Long-Depaquit 2023 won the Les Vaudésirs Chardonnay and Chablis trophies.

However, Australian winery Tolpuddle Vineyard scored the competition’s highest points – 98 – for its Chardonnay 2023, which won four Trophies: International Chardonnay Trophy, Tasmanian Chardonnay, Australian Chardonnay, and Australian White Trophies. Tolpuddle Vineyard picked up two additional trophies for its Pinot Noir 2023: the Australian Pinot Noir Trophy and Australian Red Trophy.
Although Maison Albert Bichot collected trophies for the best French red and white, and Tolpuddle Vineyard picked up trophies for the best Australian red and white, it was still a huge surprise when Devon-based Lyme Bay Winery did the double – best English red and white. It’s the first time the same English winery has won both trophies in the same year. Full story here.
Nyetimber, the first producer in the United Kingdom to exclusively plant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, confirmed its place as the UK’s leading sparkling wine producer. It won three trophies at IWC 2025. The West Sussex estate’s Blanc de Blancs 2016 Magnum was awarded the English Blanc de Blancs Trophy and English Sparkling Trophy. The 1086 By Nyetimber 2013 – a blend of 51% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 9% Pinot Meunier – won the English Classic Blend Trophy. For the story behind Nyetimber’s success, click here

Some other key results:
