Pieter Ferreira to Receive IWC Lifetime Achievement Award

One of the great legends of sparkling wine, Pieter Ferreira has spent a lifetime championing South African Cap Classique.

It was an easy decision: universally liked and supremely talented, Pieter Ferreira was the perfect candidate to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 International Wine Challenge Awards in September.

Affectionately known as "Mr Bubbles", I first met Pieter at a sparkling wine conference at Denbies in Surrey. I liked him straight away – not only did he come prepared with a generous selection of Graham Beck's top cuvées, he was also fun, affable, and wonderfully irreverent during the drier sections (where's the dosage?) of the symposium. Few individuals have been as instrumental in establishing Cap Classique - the South African name for traditional method sparkling wine - as Pieter Ferreira. Or made me laugh over lunch. 



"It's not often that one person comes to define an entire category of wine," says IWC Co-Chair Jamie Goode.

"But Pieter Ferreira, who has just retired from more than three decades heading up celebrated South African sparkling wine producer Graham Beck, has done this. He remains chair of the Cap Classique Producers Association (CCPA), and during his tenure, this category of wine has grown significantly."

His career began in 1984, when Ferreira joined Achim von Arnim at Pierre Jourdan in Franschhoek – South Africa's first specialist Cap Classique producer. Further experience came through harvests in Champagne before he accepted a position at Graham Beck in 1990. For over 35 years, Ferreira's panache, determination and charisma helped build Graham Beck into one of the world's leading brands of premium New World sparkling wine.

"But his international footprint extended well beyond South Africa, with five vintages in California with Jackson Family Wines, and the founding of GBinGB (Graham Beck in Great Britain) in 2018," notes Goode.

Indeed, his wines have appeared at moments of considerable historical significance: a Graham Beck Cap Classique made under his leadership was served at Nelson Mandela's 1994 presidential inauguration and Barack Obama's 2008 election celebration.

Ferreira formally retired from Graham Beck in 2026, handing the reins to colleague Pierre de Klerk. But his journey continues with his own label, Pieter Ferreira Cap Classique, made in collaboration with his wife Anne.

The IWC Lifetime Achievement Award could not be bestowed on a more deserving winemaker. He has made a profound contribution to the identity, quality, and global standing of South African sparkling wine. And he's a great guy to boot!
