Forever Young: 2013 Vintage Wines Win Gold at New-Look International Wine Challenge

December 4, 2013

The 31st International Wine Challenge announces 10 Gold medals from the 2013 vintage

The International Wine Challenge (IWC) today announces the medal winners from the first tasting session of the 2014 competition, including ten Gold medals from the 2013 vintage.
  • Eight 2013 Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs won Gold, showcasing the iconic style of balanced, fruity white wines from this famous growing region on New Zealand’s South Island.
  • Producer Pernod Ricard received three Golds; for its Stoneleigh Rapaura Series, Stoneleigh Latitude and Brancott Estate Letter Series B Sauvignon Blancs.
  • Villa Maria earned two Gold for its Private Bin and Reserve Clifford Bay wines.
  • Completing the golden Marlborough Sauvignon list were Sacred Hill Orange Label, from Sacred Hill Vineyards, The Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from Mud House Wines and The King’s Favour from Marisco Vineyards.
  • 2013 is also a golden year for two South American whites: Viña Cono Sur’s Reserva Especial Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, and Laborum Torrontés from Argentinean producer El Porvenir de Cafayate.
  • After 30 years, the IWC has made a fundamental change to its judging schedule. There are now separate tastings in autumn and spring, allowing winemakers to choose when to enter their wines during the global industry’s different production and sales cycles.
  • Newly-added Tranche 1 took place at the end of November; Tranche 2 will happen in April 2014, as in previous years.

Charles Metcalfe, the co-Chairmen of the IWC commented:

“It is a common misconception amongst wine drinkers that young wines lack depth and quality, but the quality of these white wines has been absolutely outstanding and shows these regions, particularly Marlborough, to be the perfect conditions for creating young white wines of the highest quality.

We changed the process to allow for Southern Hemisphere wines to really shine, and the 2013 vintage Gold medal winners prove that this new tasting schedule is a great way to discover excellent young New World wines. We know we’ve definitely made the right decision to update our process.”

Charles Metcalfe continued:

“By hosting two separate tasting events across the year, we are ensuring that no matter where or when a wine is produced, it will be given the best possible chance for success. For some wines, six months of additional ageing in bottle will be the difference between medal bands, and the implications of this could be huge for a winemaker. The quality of wine we saw at this new Tranche has been excellent and we’re very excited about this new, improved schedule for the International Wine Challenge.”
