May 13, 2013

France triumph at IWC with more Gold medals than any other country.

France has once again fought off international competition to come top of the IWC medals table cementing their position as the leading winemakers in the world.  French wines were awarded a total of 113 Gold medals, 32 more than their closest rival Australia.

Now in its 30th year the International Wine Challenge has seen France top the medal table every year.  Not only do French winemakers lead the way in medal wins, but also trounced the competition with their diversity with 18 different Gold winning varietals.  French classics such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir picked up Gold as well as more unusual varieties such as Mourvèdre, Petit Manseng, and Viognier achieving gold.
  • Some key wins came from Domaine Laroche who picked up Gold for two of their 2010 Chablis (Grand Gu Les Blanchots and Grand Cru Les Clos)
  • Château Les Amoureuses won Gold with their 2011 Dandy Black Grenache and Cave de Train created a Gold standard Syrah, Saint Joseph Espirit de Granit 2010
  • The oldest French Gold medal winner was a 1992 Grand Vintage from Moët & Chandon.
  • The 30th International Wine Challenge awarded 514 Gold medals this year, making it a record for quality with wines
  • Entries were received from all over the world including Peru, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Lebanon and Thailand

Charles Metcalfe, Co-Chairman of the IWC, says:

“Year on year, the French wines wow the judges at the IWC with their quality, elegance and sophistication, but this year the standard has been out of this world. French winemakers have an international reputation for creating world class wines, with some winemakers around the world attempting to replicate their style.  The French winemakers who created these Gold medal winners are truly masters of their craft.”
