White Gold: South Africa White Wines Pick Up 14 Gold Medals at International Wine Challenge

Eighteen South African wines have been awarded Gold medals at the prestigious awards, including fourteen white wine medals.

 
South African wines shined at the 30th International Wine Challenge winning 18 Gold medals in a record year of success.  Fourteen of the much-coveted Gold medals were awarded for white wines demonstrating the excellence of South African white wines on an international stage.

Announced today, the results show the temperate climate of warm summers and cool winters in South Africa makes it arguably the best warm climate white wine producing country.  Winners include a 2012 Sauvignon Blanc for Groot Constantia, a Sumaridge Estate 2010 Chardonnay and Escapades Semillon (2012) produced in Stellenbosch, one of the world’s most renowned wine regions. South Africa also produced the best value Gold medal winner of the whole competition; a Arabella Chenin Blanc which retails at just £6.25 from Naked Wines showing you can get high quality South African wine even on a modest budget.
  • Lothian Vineyards picked up a gold for their 2011 Pinot Noir, as did Nederburg ll Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon (2008) for Distell Ltd
  • Oldenburg Vineyard Rhodium won Gold with their 2010 Merlot showing the versatility and quality of South African winemakers
  • The 30th International Wine Challenge awarded 514 Gold medals this year, making it a record for quality with wines
  • Entries were received from all over the world including Peru, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Lebanon and Thailand
